Installation Support
|
Occasionally, you may encounter errors when installing
our products, either regarding a missing file, or a
missing export in a file.
This because our products require a set of Microsoft
base files in order to run. Usually, these files are
already present on most systems, but if not, or if our
installation is unable to update them, the application
will either report the files are missing:
'The dynamic link library MFC42.DLL could not be found in the specified path...'
Or it will report that they are out of date ( a
component in the file is missing ):
'The SOMEFILE.EXE file is linked to missing export MFC42.DLL:6880.'
These files normally live in the SYSTEM32 directory
under your WINDOWS, WIN95, or WINNT directory. However,
if other applications are using them when you install
our products (or anyone else's products, for that
matter), they will potentially not be updated. For
this reason, it is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you exit
all other running applications when you install
new software.
To make matters more complicated, the operating
system allows installation programs to copy files
into a directory in a delayed fashion, where they
are not actually transferred until the system is
restarted. This is how the system allows itself to
be updated - files normally in use are updated at
startup when no processes are using them.
So, to optimize your chances of a successful
installation:
1. Stop all running applications (Browsers, Virus scanners, Word Processors, ...)
2. Install the application.
3. Reboot.
